Visa's CEO hinted during a keynote speach that Visa may be looking at increasing incentives for PCI compliance.
Coghlan’s reference to incentives for compliance with the Payment Card Industry data-security standard follows a year that saw major hacker breaches of databases containing sensitive card information, including PINs for debit cards. “We need to do a better job with data security,” Coghlan said.
Visa must know that by requiring PCI for only the largest merchants and processors, attacks will be pushed to smaller players, who can't afford the cost of a full PCI audit. One way to reduce costs would be to incent developers to write more secure code:
Visa is looking to "make it financially attractive" for software developers to write secure applications, said John Coghlan, who was named president and CEO of the Foster City, Calif.-based company in July.
If you can incent the developers to write more secure code, that would be part of the problem, but only a part.
